What to Wear for Headshots (and what to skip)

April 29, 2025

Choosing what to wear for your headshots can feel like a lot—but it doesn’t have to be. Whether you're rebranding your business, updating your LinkedIn, or just want to celebrate a new chapter, here's how to show up looking polished andlike yourself.

1. Start with your vibe.

Are you going for professional, creative, relaxed, or bold? Your outfit should match the message you’re trying to send. A clean blazer says confident and classic. A flowy blouse or bold jumpsuit? More personal brand energy. Know your audience, then dress for you.

2. Stick to solid colors and minimal patterns.

Avoid busy prints or logos that distract from your face. Neutrals, jewel tones, and muted colors photograph beautifully. Bonus: they’ll match pretty much any background we use.

3. Bring options.

Don’t feel boxed into one look. I always recommend bringing a couple of different tops or layers. Think one professional, one personal, and maybe one that just makes you feel unstoppable.

4. Avoid neon, tiny stripes, or ultra-shiny fabrics.

They don’t love the camera and the camera doesn’t love them back. Trust me.

5. Accessorize intentionally.

Statement earrings? Sure. A bold lip? Go for it. But keep it intentional — you want the focus on your face and personality, not on the hardware.

6. Bonus: hair + makeup tips.

Go slightly more polished than your everyday look, but not so far that you don’t recognize yourself. If you’re booking a makeup artist, opt for natural glam that works well on camera.

Still not sure? I send every client a prep guide after booking — plus you can always text me outfit selfies. I love being part of the decision-making!

Whether you're updating your LinkedIn or launching a new brand, this post covers wardrobe tips for professional and personal headshots—so you look confident, not corporate cookie-cutter.
